Meta tags
- Use meta tags for both Description and Keywords in all key pages.
- Don't use commas in the description tag.
- Strategic keywords should always be at least two or more words long.
- Create descriptive, short, title tags using key words.
- Don't repeat keywords more than four times—this counts the page content.
- Create customized keyword and description tags for each page.
- Create a non-framed version of your home page for search engines that
don't handle frames.
Keyword text on pages
- Content is king. Use rich content. "Big, dumb, pages work best."
- Use keywords frequently, mostly in your text. Be sure your strategic keywords appear in the crucial locations on your web pages.
- Don't overuse key words—limit to no more than four instances on a page.
- Use your strategic keywords for your page headline, if possible. Have them also appear in the first paragraphs of
the first page of your web.
- Put important content at the top of the pages.
Links
- Expand your text references—explain them and use them in the text.
- If the home page is mainly an image map, add text links to the page.
- Create a site map page with text links to everything in your web site.
Coding tips
- Pages that are plain HTML work best for search engines.
- Tables can "push" your text further down the page tables (Meta tags help)
- Large sections of JavaScript can also have the same affect as tables (Meta tags help)
- Make sure there is HTML text on your page. Not just graphics.
- Use Alt tags.
- Be sure that your HTML text is visible.
- Some of the major search engines cannot follow frame links. Make sure there is an alternative method for them to enter and index your site, either through meta tags or smart design.
- CGI and DB generated pages may be a problem. Consider creating static pages whenever possible, perhaps using the database to update the pages, not to generate them on the fly.
General
- Don't spam. (Use same words over and over.)
- If it's not too late, pick a unique business name.
- If it's not too late, pick a business name with an available URL.
Submitting to search engines
- Submit key pages as well as home page when possible.
- Don't trust the submission process to automated programs and services.
- If you need international coverage, manually submit to the other country versions of those search engines that have country—specific searches.
- Resubmit your site any time you make significant changes
- Negotiate reciprocal links with sites that do appear in the top ten lists.
- Monitor your results frequently, especially with the top ten engines.
- Consider paying. Many search engines give priority placement to those
who pay. They also process listing requests faster for those who pay.
