What is usability?
Usability is simple.
- Can your visitors do what they want to on your site?
- Can they attain their goals easily and quickly?
What are the key factors in Web usability?
The oldest advice is the best
- Valuable content
- Speed
- Ability to find information or accomplish a goal
What is goal-oriented design?
This concept applies to the way people behave when they
go to a Web site. It is useful to think of their behavior in terms of what they
want to do, their goal, rather than their task. It is a subtle difference, but helps us
keep the focus on the visitor, rather than on what we want them to do.
What do people want to do?
There are only a few basic reasons for going to the
Web--and they each require their own type of site design.
- To find information, including product information
- To buy something
- To be entertained
What about scrolling?
You have probably heard that people don't like to scroll. This is true,
with one exception--when they find the information they want (reach their
goal) they are quite willing to read extensively. At that point they usually
don't want to have to keep clicking to get all the information. They may also
wish to print this page, so be sure your design accommodates printing.
