Whale Watching

whale.jpg (7056 bytes)

Three pods of Orca whales live in the San Juan waters year round. Best months to see them near the islands are May through September--that's when they come into these waters to feed. You also often see gray and Minke whales, Dall's and harbor porpoises, and occasionally pacific white-sided dolphins or a humpback whale, as well as seals, birds, and many other animals.

You can go on whale watching trips out of Anacortes as well as many other locations in the area. Our local trips are all lead by a naturalist. This is one of the mandatory experiences if you visit for long enough. The trips in the morning are usually 5 to 6 hours. Shorter afternoon trips are also available, for a little more money, because by then they know where the whales are.
