Many factors influenced women artists at the turn of the last century, and these forces produced both Hanscom's art and the tragedy that kept her from continuing:
  • The role of women in Victorian and Edwardian times
  • The wildness of the west coast of the United States
  • Family expectations and treatment for a creative woman
  • Self-imposed guilt
  • Depression
  • The chemicals photographers used
  • Menopause

This web site will look at her life, her work, and these issues in an attempt to understand her as an artist, a wife, a mother, and an individual.
