Many factors influenced women artists at the
turn of the last century, and these forces produced both Hanscom's art and
the tragedy that kept her from continuing:
- The role of women in Victorian and Edwardian times
- The wildness of the west coast of the United States
- Family expectations and treatment for a creative woman
- Self-imposed guilt
- Depression
- The chemicals photographers used
- Menopause
